Value Wine Suggestions

Concannon Central Coast Petite Sirah 2003 ($25)

The wine is full-bodied, rich with cherry flavours, a hint of tasty oak and a smooth silky finish. You can enjoy it with beef or lamb, but I drink it with anything, including sushi.

Elderton Barossa Friends Vineyard Series 02 Cabernet Sauvignon($25)

This mouth-filling cabernet shows classic characters of black cherries, chocolate with cider and refines soft tannins from aging in American oak. The wonderful ripe fruit character is especially obvious and the wine is extremely well balanced.

Barossa Semillon by Peter Lehmann ($16)

Bright clear color with lively citrus semillon on the nose. It's crisp with lemon-citrus flavours and a refreshing dry finish. At $16 it's a great value. Not only is it delightful to sip on a hot summer day, but it's also a perfect partner for many Asian foods and Seafood.

Scrubby Rise ($17)

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Viognier from Wirra Wirra Vineyards from McLaren Vale Australia. It's a pale green with light-straw hues and distinctive grassy notes, typical of sauvignon blanc with hints of minerality. The viognier component is apparent from the apricot kernel and orange-peel characters. It's rich, vibrant, zesty and fruit-driven with grapefruit and lime, spice and tropical-fruit flavours. While this wine can simply be enjoyed on its own, it should be chilled to less than 10 degrees and can be served with most foods, particularly fish and chicken dishes that complement the bright fruit and acid of the wine.

Futures Shiraz ($29)

From the Barossa Valley 2003 vintage produced by Peter Lehmann is a classic. This wine was made from an excellent red-wine year and from outstanding parcels of fruit sourced from a small number of specialist Barossa growers. It has a deep-red colour with a rich-black centre. The aroma is a soft bouquet showing a beautiful balance between dark plums, black fruit and oak characters with hints of nutmeg and vanilla. It's an outstanding quality, classic Barossa shiraz with powerful mouth-filling velvety fruit character. This wine is excellent with braised lamb shanks, rare beef and richly flavoured casseroles. And, naturally, it's also excellent with aged cheddar cheeses.

Clancy's Legendary Red ($20)

It's a blend of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. The wine is black-cherry in colour with the aroma dominated by chocolate and ripe plums, with an underlying hint of fresh minty leafness from the cabernet and merlot. It's a soft textured medium-bodied wine showing harmonious balance of fruit and beautifully intergrated oak. A very solid red. It's delicious with roast chicken, bolognaise and vegetarian cheese dishes.

Penfold's Thomas Hyland Shiraz ($20)

Penfold's Thomas Hyland Shiraz - a full flavoured wine with juicy red plum, cassis and hints of chocolate across the palate. Well rounded tannins, with excellent depth and length. Perfect with beef, veal or bold cheeses.

Angus The Bull (Cabernet Sauvignon) ($20)

Angue The Bull is a full-bodied cabernet with ripe berry and dark chocolate notes, tight tannins and a bold, smoky finish. Literally made for premium cuts of beef.

Chateau Clos De La Tour 2002 ($25)

This is a robust, full-bodied wine with notes of currant and cedar wood. Its firm tannins and balanced acidity will also lend itself to some moderate aging (from five to eight years) if you do not want to drink it immediately. This, like other Bordeaux, is a more structured, elegant wine so do not expect the lush gulpability that a big Australian Shiraz may provide.
